Awarding CSRT Continuing Professional Development Credits to External Education Activities

The Canadian Society of Respiratory Therapists (CSRT) has a strategic mandate to support the continuing professional development and practice of respiratory therapists across Canada and internationally. To this end, the CSRT maintains a process to accredit external education opportunities for CSRT continuing professional development credits.

CSRT accreditation of external education opportunities provides respiratory therapists with an assurance that these events have undergone an impartial assessment and evaluation, and that the content supports their continuing professional development.

Criteria for Obtaining CSRT Credits

For the purposes of obtaining CSRT credits for CE/CPD activities, the following criteria must be met

  • be relevant to respiratory therapists,
  • be evidence-based,
  • have clearly articulated educational objectives indicating the intended outcomes of the education offering,
  • be of sufficient scope to allow participants to meet the stated educational objectives of the offering,
  • be delivered by a presenter with credentials relevant to the topic being presented, disclose any financial support or possible conflicts of interest,
  • be at least 30 minutes in length (including any pre-read, question and answer periods or post-testing),
  • provide documentation to participants that clearly identifies the completion of the educational offering,
  • provide information that is beyond entry-to-practice level unless it is being promoted as a review or refresher activity.

Period of Validity for CSRT CPD Credits

The credits assigned by the CSRT will be valid for a period of two years provided there are no changes or updates to the content.

  • Should any of the content of an educational offering approved for CSRT credits change during the two-year approval period, the presenting organization must disclose updates to the CSRT which will then determine whether or not the approval remains valid. This may result in a reassessment of the educational offering, including relevant fees.
  • For offerings that were recorded prior to the application for accreditation, the credits assigned will be valid for two years from the date upon which they were recorded.
  • Individual participants in an educational activity accredited by the CSRT maintain any CPD credits earned beyond the two-year time limits imposed on the offering itself.

Promotion of CSRT-accredited events

Once the CSRT has accredited an external educational offering, the presenting organization must indicate that the offering has been accredited by the CSRT and must indicate that responsibility for the accuracy of the educational content is that of the organization providing the education.
